Visian ICL is a refractive procedure in which contact lenses are surgically implanted in the eye, between the iris and the eye’s natural lens. As opposed to LASIK, ICL does not involve the removal of corneal tissue. Much in the same way that glasses and contact lenses work, ICL causes light to focus correctly onto the retina. The main difference is that with ICL, the lenses are in your eyes – and safely remain there!

Eyeworks’ ophthalmologist, Dr. Richard Chu, is an experienced and qualified corneal surgeon for both ICL and LASIK surgery. He completed fellowship training in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the Pepose Vision Institute in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Chu trained extensively under Jay Pepose, M.D., a pioneer of refractive laser surgery and a clinical professor of ophthalmology at the Washington University. By choosing Eyeworks and Dr. Chu for your ICL surgery, you can be assured that you are in good hands.

Am I a Candidate for Visian ICL?

Are you tired of glasses and contact lenses? Have you been told that you are not a candidate for LASIK? Or are you qualified for LASIK, but would prefer a refractive surgery that is less susceptible to post-op dry eyes and easily correctable in the event of future vision changes?

Visian ICL surgery may be the best choice for treating your myopia, astigmatism, or other visual conditions. Certain conditions that would render a patient ill-suited for LASIK, such as a thin cornea, may not be an issue at all with ICL.

At Eyeworks, we offer a free consultation including thorough tests with advanced technology to determine whether or not you would benefit from ICL. We will analyze your vision and thoroughly examine your eyes before discussing your options with you. Call us today to find out more.

Benefits of Visian ICL

ICL can easily be “corrected” if vision changes. Unlike LASIK, corneal tissue is not removed. In fact, if it is ever necessary, the implanted lenses can be surgically removed or exchanged for a different prescription. The lenses are designed not to require maintenance, and their condition can easily be assessed in an annual eye exam.

Other benefits over LASIK - Unlike LASIK, ICL is generally not inhibited by a thin cornea or propensity to dry eyes. The implanted lenses provide UV protection.

The surgery is proven. It has been performed on over a million eyes since it was introduced in 1997, and the post-surgery satisfaction rate of patients is over 99%.

What are other solutions?

After your free consultation, we may determine together that you are not the ideal candidate for ICL. This could be for medical reasons pertaining to your eyes and overall health, or it may be that another type of refractive surgery will be as effective for your vision.

  1. LASIK is a non-invasive surgery which reshapes your cornea. It is even quicker than ICL surgery, and is generally painless, involving a shorter recovery period. It is one of the most popular refractive surgeries in the country today.
  2. PRK is very similar to LASIK, but is generally considered a superior option for those with thin corneas. Unlike LASIK, it does not involve creating a flap in the cornea, which also makes it a better choice than LASIK for athletes and those with active lifestyles who are at higher risk for the flap being dislocated. It requires a longer recovery process than LASIK.

If you are seeking an alternative for Visian ICL, we will thoroughly explain all your other options that might be available to help you enhance your vision.
