Reading Glasses For Kids

CREATOR: gd jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v80), quality = 75

Eye care for children is something that should start from an early age — even before they start school. A comprehensive eye exam is important, mainly to rule out any underlying eye conditions.

Who Needs Reading Glasses?

Reading glasses are for use in children to correct both refractive errors and to support the eyes as they are developing and coping with the demands of school. The most common refractive errors are myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. Children may need glasses to support their eyes due to focusing difficulties or other binocular vision problems. Signs that a child may need glasses include:

  • Frequent squinting, eye strain, or eye rubbing
  • Complaints their eyes get tired or they are seeing double
  • Difficulties reading or learning
  • Dislikes doing school work
  • Attention or concentration problems

If you notice any of these behaviors, bring your child to an eye doctor for an eye exam.

Types of Eye Exams For Children

Typically, your child’s optometrist can start comprehensive eye exams before the child can even recognize letters, to check the child’s eye health or any obvious signs of eye disease. As the child reaches ages 2 or older, they will start to recognize pictures and symbols. This allows their vision to be examined in greater depth.

Before a child starts school it is important to have a comprehensive eye examination to check that the two eyes are working together to rule out lazy eye and eye turns as well as visual skills, including focusing, eye tracking, and binocular vision.

If your child has already been diagnosed with a vision problem or has a family history of vision or eye problems, comprehensive eye exams are even more essential.
